Indian University Team Embarks on a Momentous Journey to World University Games Chengdu 2021

Chengdu], [26 July 2023] – The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) is proud to announce the departure of the Indian University Team for the prestigious World University Games (WUG) in Chengdu, China, scheduled to be held from 28th July to 8th August 2023. With an unparalleled spirit of excellence and determination, the Indian athletes are set to compete in 12 exciting competitions including Athletics, Badminton, Archery, Volleyball, Judo, Fencing, Wushu, Taekwondo, Table tennis, Shooting, Tennis, and Swimming.

The journey to this global sporting extravaganza began with an intense selection process held at nodal universities, including KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, GNDU Amritsar, Chandigarh University, Manav Rachna University, and Jain University, Bangalore. From a pool of 482,000 students, the finest talent has been captured, making the Indian University Team a formidable force in the upcoming World University Games.

Universiade, known as the World University Games, is an important international event held every two years, promoting sportsmanship and camaraderie among university students from around the world. Originally scheduled for 2021, the games were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the spotlight turns to Chengdu, where over 10,000 athletes will gather to showcase their extraordinary abilities in 18 sports and 269 events.

The Indian University Team comprises 325 talented participants, including athletes and officials, hailing from 70 prestigious universities across India. These selected exceptional athletes underwent rigorous training and preparation, dedicating themselves to representing the nation with pride and passion.

The event promises an exhilarating display of skill and tenacity as Indian athletes compete with a relentless pursuit of excellence. The Indian University Team is poised to shine in front of the world, with notable stars like Ms Manu Bhaker (Shooting), Ms.Elavenil Valarivan (Shooting), Mr.Srihari Nataraj (Swimming), Ms.Priyanka Goswami (Athletics),Ms. Tanya Chaudhury (Hammer Throw), Ms. Jyothi Yarraji (100m Hurdles), Mr. Tejaswin Shankar (High Jump) and many more.

The sports division of the Association of Indian Universities took the lead to field the Indian contingent in the World University Games.Being one of the universities that promotes sports in an exemplary manner,KIIT University, Bhubaneswar was entrusted with responsibility to coordinate the documentation of the Indian contingent and Dr. Gaganendu Dash, Director General Sports, KIIT University was appointed as the Head of Delegation. The esteemed Deputy Heads of Delegation include Amit Bhalla, Vice President, Manav Rachna University, Faridabad, Dr. M Sundar, Vice Chancellor, Tamil Nādu Physical Education and Sports University and  Dr. Davinder Singh Dhull, Vice Chancellor, JJT University.

The grand inaugural ceremony for the World University Games will be held on 28th July and the Indian contingent will be held by Olympian Ms. Manu Bhakar (Shooter, Manav Rachna University, Delhi)  and Common Wealth medalist  Mr. Tejaswin Shankar(Athlete, KIIT University Bhubaneswar). The Indian contingent was given a warm welcome by the host university today and the Head of the Delegation of Indian contingent exchanged gifts with the host university.
